In the summer of 2004 I was honored to be asked to be the obedience
instructor at Mahogany Ridge Kids Camp
in Saratoga Springs, New York. When I agreed to this venture, little did I
know of the experience I would have in those short five days. We had 19 kids and dogs.
My first reaction was what am I in for, eight hours a day for the next five
days with all these kids and dogs! Am I crazy?!!! Well, guess what?
I did not go crazy, I loved every minute of it and when the kids and
their dogs demonstrated everything they learned for their parents at
the end of the week, I had tears running down my cheeks! Those kids were phenomenal!
Their days were packed with excitement of agility, obedience, guest speakers,
discussions about dog behavior and health, crafts, snacks, games, lunch and the ice cream lady!
Theresa Richmond, owner, trainer/instructor, of Mahogany Ridge Training and
Doggie Day Care facility is the genius behind this camp. The camp is now in
its seventh year. And I will be returning as their obedience instructor for as
long as Theresa wants me. And I can't wait to be there! My heart was so full
when I returned home after that first camp. It has been one of the most rewarding
experiences I have had in my career as an instructor so far. And I am happy
to say that two families from New Jersey were there. What a beautiful place to
vacation! You get to go to some beautiful spas, (Saratoga Springs is full of them!),
great restaurants, unique shopping, and beautiful lakes and of course the famous
horse racing track! Come with your spouse or better yet a girl friend and make
it a week to treat yourself while your kids and the dog have a blast at Kids Camp!
